1.29.08 Butterfly Garden Brag Book Page 7

So today took Cari and I towards the north shore of Oahu, we spent some time at Kukaniloko otherwise known as "The Birthing Rocks" in Wahiawa, Hawaii. It's one of the most sacred sites on Oahu, and it seems as almost no one knows about it. It's where ancient Hawaiian women traveled to from all over the state (including the neighbor islands) while in labor in order to give birth to the ali'i or royal children of Hawaii. What most articles don't mention is that just beyond the grove of coconut palms surrounding the ancient stones is a view of a mountain range containing the profile of a pregnant woman (see picture below). It's always amazing to me to stand in or on an historic site, this is a special one to me - I hope that someday you all can experience this amazingly sacred and peaceful place!

On to the freebie!!

Enjoy!

What a beautiful picture and what a great historic fact. Thanks for sharing your Hawaii. I never thought I would like to visit as it seemed so touristy. Thanks for a different view.

Beautiful! I've been to Hawaii once to visit my family there. Saw some things but not as much as I'd like since I was pregnant (didn't want to hike around much) and had two little ones with us. I would love to go back again just hubbie and me. You've given me some ideas of things I'd like to do then. Thanks!

Dang, nobody showed me the pregnant mountain when I was there. I did see Kennedy's face in the rocks on a mountain though. You all have some neat mountains. lol

I love your info about the mountain. I have been there (have a simiar picture) but our guide told us that it was the silouette of a chief (man) not a woman. And of course, shje didn't say anything about the birth site. I find this particularily interesting because I am a Certified Nurse Midwife and find that tadbit very interesting. And our guide knoew this, makes me think she didn't know about the site either. Thanks so much for sharing!
